Judging by the fact that the 6th Buffs lost less than one man per day in the 8 days before, they must have been at least in between battles, perhaps not in the front trenches even. Early in May in the 3rd battle of the Scarpe they had suffered heavy losses and were relieved on 4th May, had two days rest at Arras then went back into the trenches until relieved again, on the 17th May, and sent to Duisan.

No known grave - Charles is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France Ref: Bay 2
and is also commemorated on Roll of Honour in St Mary's Church, Newmarket
also on the war memorial at Six Mile Bottom
